Montblanc Meisterstück 138

1940s

The Meisterstück 138 is relatively rare to find because it was only produced for one year; it is the second-largest Meisterstück of its time.

Another special feature of the 138 is that it is probably the only Meisterstück that was not available with a gold nib.

The following variants were produced:
- 138 with steel nib (see photos) and
- 138 with two-tone nib plated with palladium (imprint: P) possibly
there were also nibs made of solid palladium (?).

Due to the war, the use of gold for fountain pen nibs was prohibited starting in 1938, which meant that primarily nibs made from steel alloy were used. For a brief period, palladium was also used for coating (or even solid?) used because it was not listed in the law governing material rationing, which also prohibited the use of gold.

Early models of the 138 consist of a combination of celluloid and hard rubber. Later models, such as the 139 around 1949, were, in contrast, manufactured completely from celluloid.

Another distinctive feature of the 138 is that the cap ring was not yet engraved and this large cap ring was not yet surrounded by two narrow rings, as was the case in later models.
