Nib / Nib Widths

- Nib Widths -

Montblanc fountain pens are typically available in the following nib widths:

EF, F, M, OM, B, OB, BB and OBB

Before buying a Montblanc fountain pen, you should definitely try out different nib widths at a specialist retailer, as the choice of nib width is truly a matter of personal taste. The smaller the handwriting, the finer the nib should be.

The choice of nib also depends on its intended use:
Should the fountain pen be used daily (notes, letters) or is it primarily intended for signatures?

For signatures, wide nibs such as B, OB, BB and OBB are particularly suitable.
For daily writing, on the other hand, EF, F, M and OM are particularly suitable.

After purchasing a fountain pen from a specialist retailer, you have 14 days to exchange the nib for free.

If you want to exchange the nib later, the fountain pen must be sent to Montblanc Customer Service (your specialist retailer can do this for you). However, a repair fee must be paid for nib exchange (your specialist retailer can tell you the current prices).

Aside: What does "O" mean in "OM", "OB" and "OBB"?

O = oblique = the tip of the nib is angled

Montblanc Meisterstück Nibs

1970s

1980s (??)

1990s
Montblanc nibs have changed over the years. On the left you can see examples of Montblanc nibs over time.

Note: The dates are from eBay auctions, so they should be treated with some caution.

Regarding Montblanc Meisterstück 149:
Older 149 models have a bi-color nib that is very similar to the nib of the 146 (and is just slightly larger). Only in the newer 149 Meisterstücke do you find a nib that has gold on the outside and inside with platinum plating in the middle.
